DataLogger Neural Recording System

The DataLogger system is an untethered, battery powered neural recording system that allows wideband continuous recording at 40 kHz sampling rate. The DataLogger system consists of the Base unit, a 32 channel headstage, an infrared emitter, and the BaseControl software.

The DataLogger is designed for freely moving experiments in mice and larger animals and the battery operated headstage allows for untethered recording during behavioral experiments. The wireless headstage is charged by connecting it to the base control unit via a Micro HDMI connector. Once charged, the headstage is placed on the animals head without any cables and the Datalogger uses infrared LEDs to send commands to the wireless headstage. Neural recording can be controlled by the commands Start, Stop, Pause, and Unpause. After recording, the headstage is plugged into the base control unit and the recorded neural data is downloaded from the headstage.

A 26 pin female Dsub connector can be used for sending in digital events to the DataLogger and the digital events are timestamped and saved locally on the base control unit. The events can then be synced with the neural recording when the base control unit is later connected to a computer and the headstage is connected to the base control unit.

Features

  • Untethered, battery powered neural recording system
  • 32 channel digital headstage, wideband continuous recording at 40 kHz sampling rate
  • Headstage uses standard Omnetics connector
  • Headstage includes user-configurable red and green tracking LEDs
  • Base unit controls headstage recording via infrared link
  • Up to four infrared emitter units can be used for coverage of a larger area
  • Base unit allows simultaneous parallel recording of digital event data; either 16 channels of individual events, or 16 bit data words, the same as one port of an OmniPlex digital input card
  • Base unit connects to a Windows 7 or Windows 10 PC using a standard USB interface
  • Headstage docks on base unit for downloading of recordings and charging
  • BaseControl software application controls data acquisition, downloads and manages recording files, and configures all options for the base unit and headstage
  • Headstage and base recordings are merged into a single acquisition file that combines wideband data and digital events in Plexon standard PL2 or PLX formats, compatible with NeuroExplorer, Offline Sorter and Plexon offline file reading SDKs
  • BaseControl’s Preview window allows the user to quickly inspect recordings on a docked headstage without having to write them to file and open them in an external application
  • User configurable headstage settings include analog and digital filter cutoffs and referencing mode, identical to an OmniPlex DHP system

DataLogger demo: untethered neural recording in a multi-level maze

In the video, the Datalogger is used to record neural activity, while learning and memory is assessed in a complex multi-level maze. The battery operated digital headstage is secured to the animal's head and the animal can move freely within the maze and between each level.
