POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH POSITION: DETERMINING IMPACT OF CANNABINOIDS ON TRANSLATIONAL COGNITIVE MARKERS IN HIV TRANSGENIC RATS
PhD required. Fiber photometry experience a bonus. Opportunity to work with clinical researchers.
Main focus will be to conduct operant research determining impact of cannabinoids on cognition in HIV transgenic rats using translational tools.
A Postdoctoral position is available immediately (start date is flexible) in the laboratory of Jared Young (Professor of Psychiatry) at University of California San Diego. Research in the laboratory focuses on translational (mouse, rat, and human), research with relevance to neuro-psychiatric disorders, specifically bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and HIV.
The position available is to work on NIDA R01-funded research examining neural circuitry of underlying cognitive and behavioral functioning in HIV transgenic rats, in addition to the impact of cannabinoids such as THC and CBD. Thus, these projects utilize a combined pharmacological and genetic approach to delineating behavioral effects of HIV-related proteins and endocannabinoids. The position requires (1) operant behavioral training and assessment of cognitive functioning (2) chronic treatment with THC or CBD, or both, (3) liaising with clinical experiments conducting research in the same behavioral domains.
The candidate should hold a Ph.D., have a strong conceptual and experimental background in neuroscience and/or physiological psychology, experience in novel neuroscience techniques, as well as be proactive, independent, hardworking, productive, and enjoy working as part of a team. The most competitive candidates will be those with at least one first-author publication in the field, have fiber photometry or optogenetic
experience, and should be committed to eventually becoming self-funded via grant applications. Willingness to work collaboratively with faculty and to mentor students from a wide range of disciplines, cultures, and academic backgrounds is essential.
The University of California San Diego offers excellent benefits. Salary is based on research experience. UCSD is an equal opportunity employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment.
