Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
• PhD in neuroscience, psychology or a related field, or the anticipated completion of a PhD in these fields prior to start date
• Research experience in a clinical or basic setting.
• Must be willing to handle/work with rodents.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Evidence of scientific accomplishment and expertise in at least one of the following areas: 1) rodent behavior models of learning, motivation, affect, or addiction 2) in vivo electrophysiology, 3) virally mediated circuit dissection approaches 4) computational neuroscience, and/or 5) cellular and molecular neuroscience.
• A strong desire to develop additional skills in at least one of the above listed areas
• Strong written and oral communication skills

About the Job

This position is in a laboratory the studies the neural mechanisms of affective and motivational processes underlying reward-seeking, and how these mechanisms are recruited or disrupted in models of alcohol addiction (https://www.richard-lab.org/). We work with a variety of methods (optogenetics, chemogenetics, in vivo electrophysiology, fiber photometry, etc.) to measure and manipulate brain activity in rats engaged in a variety of reward-related behavioral tasks. We currently have funded postdoctoral positions to examine the neural mechanisms of aversion-resistant alcohol seeking and consumption, and cue-elicited alcohol seeking. We also have ongoing projects examining how brains represent the motivational value of cues, and the expected value of future outcomes.

Job duties:
85% Independent research: The postdoctoral associate will design, conduct, and analyze research studies related to the neural and behavioral processes underlying motivated behavior and write up the results for publication, in consultation with the principal investigator. Within the first year, the postdoctoral associate will submit an application for a postdoctoral research fellowship and will submit an abstract to present their research findings at national or international conference.
15% General laboratory support: help maintain inventory of common supplies for the laboratory, maintain equipment in working order, sterilize supplies as needed, and keep records of protocols and standard operating procedures. Work with staff to ensure compliance with university and federal safety regulations. Assist in the supervision and training of undergraduate and graduate students, and research technicians.
